The SaaS tools Indians overpay most on
A dollar-billed subscription costs an Indian buyer more than the sticker, because a card adds a forex markup and 18% GST lands on the fee, roughly a 23% premium on every charge. We ranked the 126 foreign-billed tools we track by how many rupees a year that quietly adds, versus a mid-market conversion of the sticker. Updated July 2026.
This is the named list of worst offenders. For the phenomenon itself, and the all-in cost ranked by software function, see The India Software Tax.
The short answer
Of the 126 dollar-billed tools we track, Expertise AI leaks the most: about ₹1,32,300 a year beyond the mid-market sticker, purely from forex markup and 18% GST. The typical ranked tool adds ₹4,989/yr. It is the priciest dollar plans that leak most, because the premium is a percentage of the fee.
Ranked by yearly overpayment
For each dollar-billed tool: the sticker, what a naive mid-market conversion implies per year, the real all-in cost after forex and 18% GST, and the gap between them. Per-seat plans are marked /user — that figure is per user, so a team overpays a multiple of it.

Run the Savings AuditMethodology
Based on the India-first SMB tools in the FindThatSoftware catalog with a source-backed monthly price. We keep only foreign-billed, monthly-recurring plans, since rupee-priced tools carry no forex layer and one-time or usage plans would distort a yearly figure. For each we take the verified starting price, convert dollars at the effective card rate (mid-market plus a ~4.1% forex markup) and add 18% GST, then subtract a naive mid-market conversion to get the yearly overpayment. Per-seat figures are per user. Numbers are indicative, not a bill, and update automatically as more tools are verified.

Frequently asked questions
- Which software do Indian buyers overpay the most on?
- Of the dollar-billed tools we track, Expertise AI tops the list: an Indian buyer pays about ₹1,32,300 a year beyond a mid-market conversion of its sticker, purely from card forex markup and 18% GST. It is the priciest dollar plans that leak the most, since the ~23% premium is a percentage of the fee.
- Why do I pay more than the sticker price?
- Two layers the pricing page never shows. Your card converts a dollar charge at an effective rate about 4.1% above the mid-market rate, and then 18% GST lands on the fee. Together that is roughly a 23% premium on every dollar-billed subscription.
- Is the GST recoverable?
- Often, partly. A GST-registered business can usually claim the 18% GST as input tax credit, so the forex markup is the harder-to-recover part. Even so, the GST is real cash out the door each month until it is reclaimed, and many small buyers never claim it.
- Are these the exact figures I will pay?
- They are indicative, not a bill. We take each tool's verified starting monthly price, convert dollars at an effective card rate, add 18% GST, and compare that to a naive mid-market conversion. Your card's markup, plan and negotiated rate will vary. The point is to show where the money leaks, not to quote you.
