The SaaS tools Indians overpay most on

A dollar-billed subscription costs an Indian business more than the sticker. The unavoidable part is the card forex markup, about 4% on every charge, and it is not reclaimable even for a GST-registered business. We ranked the 122 foreign-billed tools we track by how many rupees a year that quietly adds, versus a mid-market conversion. Add 18% GST on top if you cannot reclaim it (a ~22% premium in all). Updated August 2026.

This is the named list of worst offenders. For the phenomenon itself, and the cost ranked by software function, see The India Software Tax.

The short answer

Of the 122 dollar-billed tools we track, WooCommerce leaks the most: about ₹25,694 a year on the card forex markup alone, which even a registered business cannot reclaim. The typical ranked tool adds ₹660/yr. If you cannot reclaim GST, add 18% on top. The priciest dollar plans leak most, because the premium is a percentage of the fee.

The ranking

Ranked by yearly overpayment

For each dollar-billed tool: the sticker, what a naive mid-market conversion implies per year, the forex-adjusted cost a registered business pays, and the forex overpayment (the gap). GST adds 18% if you cannot reclaim it. Per-seat plans are marked /user, so a team overpays a multiple of the figure shown.

Methodology

Based on the India-first SMB tools in the FindThatSoftware catalog with a source-backed monthly price. We keep only foreign-billed, monthly-recurring plans, since rupee-priced tools carry no forex layer and one-time or usage plans would distort a yearly figure. For each we take the verified starting price, convert dollars at the effective card rate (mid-market plus a ~3.5% forex markup), then subtract a naive mid-market conversion to get the yearly forex overpayment a registered business bears. Adding 18% GST gives the figure for a buyer who cannot reclaim it. Per-seat figures are per user. Numbers are indicative, not a bill, and update automatically as more tools are verified.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which software do Indian buyers overpay the most on?
Of the dollar-billed tools we track, WooCommerce tops the list: a registered business overpays about ₹25,694 a year on the card forex markup alone, which is not reclaimable. The priciest dollar plans leak the most, since the ~4% forex premium is a percentage of the fee. Add 18% GST on top if you cannot reclaim it.
Why do I pay more than the sticker price?
The card forex markup: your card converts a dollar charge at about 3.5% above the mid-market rate, and that is not reclaimable. There is also 18% GST, but a registered business reclaims it as input credit (foreign B2B is reverse-charged), so it only adds to your bill if you cannot reclaim it, taking the premium to about 22%.
Is the GST recoverable?
Often, partly. A GST-registered business can usually claim the 18% GST as input tax credit, so the forex markup is the harder-to-recover part. Even so, the GST is real cash out the door each month until it is reclaimed, and many small buyers never claim it.
Are these the exact figures I will pay?
They are indicative, not a bill. We take each tool's verified starting monthly price, convert dollars at an effective card rate (mid-market plus the forex markup), and compare that to a naive mid-market conversion. The gap is the forex overpayment a registered business bears; GST adds 18% more if you cannot reclaim it. Your card's markup, plan and negotiated rate will vary. The point is to show where the money leaks, not to quote you.
