What WhatsApp Business API Really Costs in India

The advertised price of a WhatsApp tool is only half the bill. Your true cost is a BSP platform fee plus Meta's per-message charges — and since Meta switched to per-message billing on 1 January 2026, most older cost guides are wrong. We combined our verified India BSP platform fees with Meta's current India rates to compute the real, blended monthly cost. Updated June 2026.

The short answer

A typical Indian BSP platform fee is Rs.2,500/month (range Rs.999Rs.3,000 across 5 verified tools). Meta then charges per message — about Rs.0.863 per marketing message and Rs.0.115 per utility/authentication message. All-in, a small business pays around Rs.3,047/month; a high-volume sender can cross Rs.29,828/month, almost entirely in Meta message fees. Figures exclude 18% GST.

Key findings

  • Two costs, not one.WhatsApp's true cost = platform fee + Meta per-message charges. Tools advertise the first and stay quiet about the second.
  • Billing is now per message (since 1 January 2026), not per 24-hour conversation. Service/user-initiated replies are free.
  • The cost driver flips with volume. At starter volume the platform fee is ~82% of the bill; at scale it's only ~8% — Meta message fees take over.
  • Marketing messages are ~8× the price of utility messages (Rs.0.863 vs Rs.0.115), so message mix matters more than BSP choice at scale.

Meta's India per-message rates

Charged by Meta on top of whatever your BSP bills, effective 1 January 2026. These are pass-through costs — your BSP may bill them at cost or with a markup.

Message typeRate (per message)Typical use

UtilityRs.0.115Order/payment/transaction alerts
AuthenticationRs.0.115OTPs, login codes

The blended monthly cost, by volume

Each scenario uses a typical (median) Rs.2,500platform fee plus Meta's per-message charges for that message mix. This is the figure you actually pay — excluding 18% GST and any BSP per-message markup.

ScenarioMessages / moPlatform feeMeta messagesAll-in / moPlatform = % of bill
StarterA small shop or D2C brand sending order updates and the odd campaign500 mktg
1,000 utility
Rs.2,500Rs.547Rs.3,04782%
GrowingA growing store running regular broadcasts plus transactional alerts5,000 mktg
10,000 utility
Rs.2,500Rs.5,466Rs.7,96631%
ScaleA high-volume seller or fintech doing heavy campaigns and alerts25,000 mktg
50,000 utility
Rs.2,500Rs.27,328Rs.29,8288%

The takeaway: at low volume, shop on platform fee; at high volume, shop on message economics (your marketing-vs-utility mix and whether your BSP adds a per-message markup). The cheapest BSP and the cheapest WhatsApp bill are rarely the same decision.

Methodology

Platform fees are the entry prices of the WhatsApp BSPs in the FindThatSoftware catalog, each confirmed on the vendor's own pricing page — a curated, verified sample, not a market census. The representative platform fee is the median of INR-priced monthly plans (a pay-as-you-go starter sets the low end of the range). Meta's per-message rates are Meta's published India rates effective 1 January 2026; service/user-initiated messages are free. Blended figures assume the BSP passes Meta's rate through at cost — some add a 10–30% markup, which we flag rather than guess. All figures exclude 18% GST. Volumes are illustrative monthly scenarios, not vendor quotes. Cite as "FindThatSoftware WhatsApp Business API Cost Study (India, 2026)."

Frequently asked questions

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in India?
There are two costs stacked together: a BSP platform fee and Meta's per-message charges. Among the verified India BSPs in our catalog, the typical (median) monthly platform fee is Rs.2,500 (range Rs.999–Rs.3,000). On top, Meta charges per message (from 1 January 2026: about Rs.0.863 per marketing message and Rs.0.115 per utility/authentication message; service replies are free). A small business sending 500 marketing + 1,000 utility messages a month pays roughly Rs.3,047/month all-in.
Is WhatsApp Business API billing per conversation or per message?
Per message, since 1 January 2026. Meta retired the old 24-hour per-conversation window and now charges for each template message sent (marketing, utility and authentication categories). Service/user-initiated messages remain free. Older cost guides that quote per-conversation pricing are out of date.
What is cheaper at high volume — a cheap BSP or a cheap Meta rate?
The Meta rate. At low volume the platform fee dominates (about 82% of an all-in starter bill), so picking a cheaper BSP saves the most. At high volume the platform fee becomes noise (about 8% of a scale bill) and Meta's per-message charges dominate — so reducing marketing-message volume and shifting to free service replies saves far more than switching BSP.
Do WhatsApp BSPs add a markup on Meta's message rates?
Some do. Many Indian BSPs now pass Meta's per-message rate through at cost and earn on the platform subscription, but others add a 10–30% per-message markup. Always confirm whether your BSP charges Meta's rate at cost or with a markup — at high message volume a markup can outweigh the entire platform fee.
Are these prices inclusive of GST?
No. Platform fees and Meta message charges are quoted exclusive of 18% GST. Budget for GST on top of every figure here.
